A class set of Sign of the Beaver is an extraordinary way for my students to read, hear, and visualize how early colonization of North America gave birth to a new nation. The text beautifully describes in rich vocabulary the events of survival in the wilderness, interactions with First Americans, and multiple dangerous encounters from the perspective of a young boy left on his own in a new world. Colorful language, descriptive scenery, and the isolation of life in a strange place will be our conduit for multiple art, writing, and creative independent and group projects. Each student having access to their own text also gives them the opportunity to read at their own pace, reread favorite passages, and connect to new and unfamiliar vocabulary. It also allows students to share with their family at home their joy and sense of wonder that only comes through rich literature such as this.
