Most of the students at the school where I teach come from families with low incomes, which qualifies it as a Title I school. They are such hard-working and sweet kids who show up ready to learn, or if not, we get them the help they need to be able to learn. Some of the students do not spend much time at home with a parent and miss out on that chance to read or do homework with an adult at home. While at this school, I've found that on average about 15-20% of my students have parents who don't speak, read, or write in English. While I know each parent wants the most for his or her child, they don't always have the time, skills, or resources to help them much from home. My students do not have access to as many learning opportunities outside of school, so the time they spend in school is absolutely essential in helping them prepare to succeed in their futures.
