Just as no two fingerprints are the same, no two class periods are the same with my students. I teach Earth Science, Social Studies, and Career Prep to 9th-12th grade self-contained special education students. While our school boasts an "On-Time Graduation Rate" of 85% on our state report card, that number is much higher than the sub-category of special education students. Only 4 of my 27 students live in the same house with both of their biological parents. Poverty at home, the prospect of getting a job to earn personal money, and not being court-ordered to attend after the age of 17 all work against me in keeping them interested in school. The more I can actively engage them in the learning process, the longer they may stick around.
