Most of my students say they hate reading. When I started to dig deeper into why they don’t like it, I was surprised by their answers. Students aren’t given the opportunity to read for pleasure. So often we tell them what to read and give them specific questions to answer. I want to give them the opportunity to find a book of their choosing and to read it for the joy of reading. We only have about 10 books in our classroom and we haven’t had a librarian in years. Most of my students simply haven’t been exposed to or don’t have access to good books. I hope that by giving them the choice, they might find their own love for reading.
