Reading this book will begin powerful discussions about race in our school, community and country. The intricately crafted characters will pull them into a world that will aid in encouraging them to understand others' point of view. We are teaching at a time where our students are dealing with issues in their communities that are affecting their daily lives. Therefore, we will read the novel together as a class, and divide into groups to conduct discussions, debates, and analysis of the book. Additionally, we will conduct literature circles where students will discuss racism and discrimination in America. It is important to me that my students have access to literature they can relate to and where they can see themselves or people they know in the characters. Reading this high interest novel will enable my students to instantly connect and feel a sense of purpose in reading. It is my goal that through a book study my students will dive deeply into social issues that arise in the novel, helping them to not only understand them, but to also discuss and provide strategies in dealing with them.
