Students will be creating an Astronomy Museum to share with 3rd graders in our district (who study the Moon, Sun, & Stars) and with the community. This museum project unit was developed using the book, Learning on Display by Linda D'Aquisto. In this Project-Based unit, students will choose their area of interest in astronomy to research and develop a museum exhibit to teach others about it. They will become curators and experts on an astronomy topic they are most interested in. We will transform our middle school into a place to learn about movements in our universe. Since this is the first time teaching astronomy this way, I was unaware that we would need so many supplies. There is less than $3/student budgeted for science. At this point that is not enough to get all the materials that will allow students to be creative with their displays. Students will need paint, glue, and other materials to develop eye-catching and informative exhibits. Art supplies are not often considered science materials and are not usually considered in our budget. The students are very excited about this project and diving into an area they are highly interested in. I want to give them the tools and materials needed to be successful and to creatively express what they have learned about our universe.
