Teaching Physics well to high school students involves the use of creative labs using common materials so students develop connections between physics concepts and day-to-day life. Students of all ethnic, socio-economic and culture groups are mixed from grades 9 to 12 in physics. Students travel from less than a block away to from all over the city to attend school, mixing poor with wealthy, minority with majority and native English speakers with English Language Learners. All types of students mix freely on campus, in clubs, sports teams and academic classes. Physics classes may be as high as 25% special education students mixed English Language Learners and Gifted and Talented Students. Students come with a wide range of mathematical abilities and school backgrounds, but all must learn and master basic physics principles as part of the course.
