The students will be participating in a Family Engagement Math Night; the theme is Pirates. The CHS's Robotics Team will also be in attendance to help the students complete a STEM challenge and even share their own robot with the students! This event has gone above and beyond what we had hoped for-- it is now not only a family engagement event but a community, cross-grade level engagement. Sixty-four students from grades 3-5 will be meeting with family members, peers and the CHS Robotics Team for a night of math engagement and fun for the whole family arghhhh! The requested items will be utilized in the following ways: two of the large inflatable dice will be rolled by each student to create a multiplication sentence that that student will solve with his or her parent— we are differentiating this activity by having 3rd graders solve 1 digit by 1 digit, and 4th and 5th solving 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems. The pirate coins will be placed in a baby pool filled with sand- the students will have to “dig” for their treasure and round the numbers we will be writing on the back to different place values - this will be differentiated as well, 5th graders will be asked to round to decimal place values. The Tangrams will be used for groups of students to recreate pirate theme images such as parrots, treasure chests, pirate symbols, etc.
