Our school is in one cities labeled as the worst cities to live in Southern California. Our school lacks many resources due to budget cuts. We are not fully staffed (no librarian or resource personnel). Technology is seriously lacking with no computer lab and 0-3 ancient desktops per classroom. However, the teachers are very caring and very skilled, which helps to make the environment very welcoming to the students. We are like a family, working with what we have to ensure that our students learn and feel safe at school. My students all began as Spanish-speaking English learners. They are all on free school lunch due to their low socio-economic status. Many come from broken homes. The majority of the students cannot receive help from their parents due to the language barrier. Even with all of these obstacles, my students come to school every morning with a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and excited to be in school.
