As a Special Education teacher and Digital Learning Specialist, my most rewarding experiences have involved using technology to help struggling students overcome barriers to learning. That is largely what this project is about, using technology to overcome barriers to reading success. I would like to provide my students with devices that will allow them to easily engage with text by highlighting important passages, making notations, easily find definitions for unfamiliar words and even allow a friendly voice to take over reading when they get tired. Because for some students reading is really, really hard work.
I think most of us have experienced the magic of finding just the right book at just the right time, at least I hope you have! That experience has the power to change how we feel about reading, and maybe even how we feel about ourselves and our world. I want that experience for my students. But how do you provide just the right book at just the right time for each unique student? The same devices that will support my students in overcoming barriers to reading success will also provide them with access to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a collection of thousands of curated, student-friendly books and audiobooks, delivered through a safe, monitored interface.
