In my class I strive to make music accessible and fun. We learn musical concepts then work to connect them to other curricular, cultural, and social ideas so that students build contextually rich understandings. We engage with singing, instruments, and body percussion in every class, alongside critical listening and music history, which allows students to experience ideas in multiple ways, take ownership of their music making, and engage creatively, physically, and intellectually with our curriculum. Our school has approximately 420 students, kindergarten through fifth grade, and every class comes to music for an hour a week. Each one of our students has unique perspective and experiences, and engaging in a variety of musical lessons and activities allows us to celebrate the singularity and similarity within our school.
