My name is Maria Covarrubias, and unlike many teachers I know, I wasn't inspired by a great teacher to become one, instead I was motivated by some of the worst teachers I had as a student myself to ensure that students always have a safe, socially just, and engaging learning environment. I try to make my classroom a refuge for my inner city students from the violence, homelessness, drugs, and instabilities of their neighborhoods and sometimes homes. I teach 11th grade English, AP Language, ELD, and Advisory. I challenge my students every day to have a growth mindset, and to strive to be the best scholars they can be in the moment and to react to every mistake or low grade with a "not yet" attitude rather than an "I can't" attitude. My students motivate me every day to grow as an educator and as a person, they are funny, silly, smart, infuriating, frustrating, resilient, friendly, and overall inspiring.
