It's easy to take for granted the knowledge readily accessible in a dictionary. It's the first reference tool we are taught to use. Using a dictionary is a foundational skill needed to gain a better understanding of language. Dictionaries not only provide word meanings, but also how to use the words. My students do not have access to this basic tool we so commonly use. Vocabulary is key to better writing and reading comprehension. My class is learning about the power of words and importance of how we communicate. They are building up their vocabulary. These dictionaries will help them to understand new words and how they are used. A class set will allow each student to explore this resource on their own. It will also allow students to take part in their own education as they will be able to find answers for themselves instead of depending solely on class content.
