Though I've been a special education teacher for years, I am new to my self-contained position this year and as such, am lacking some supplies that are critical for the development of my students, who are impacted across all developmental areas. Wooden blocks foster creativity, spacial reasoning, and the use of language. They also offer students an opportunity to practice social skills such as sharing and accepting the ideas of others. Though they may appear to be a very basic toy, blocks are a critical component of early childhood education. The light table will be used to provide sensory input for my students, who often need external assistance with self regulation. Light tables can be used in a variety of ways, and help to make less preferred tasks such as writing and counting more appealing. They can be used in conjunction with see-through colored blocks, water beads, and other translucent materials. The delight young students have when playing with light often generates more language and comes with the same social opportunities as the wooden blocks.
