Schools must adopt a culturally relevant pedagogy to engage students and encourage them to read, learn, and think positively of their selves and their possibilities. Gloria Ladson-Billings (1995) suggests this theory to address student achievement and help students to accept and affirm their own cultural identity while developing critical thinking skills and critical perspectives that challenge social justice issues.
It is imperative that students are exposed to literature containing relevant and relatable characters with whom they can identify and from whom they can learn to prepare themselves to face struggles, rise above their circumstances, and gain the success to ensure a brighter future for their next generation. Therefore, I am requesting assistance in purchasing a class set of "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas, to encourage my students to read, learn, and recognize that they have the capacity to plot the course of their own lives and to make a difference in the world.
