Good quality literature about historical events provides students with a better understanding of the world we live in. As teachers today, we are encouraged to bind together our instruction using historical events with reading instruction. If these events do not become real for our students, learning does not happen. It is through the quality introduction of literature that students learn to read, evaluate, and debate daily issues. I am wanting to use these books to help students understand the issues surrounding the civil war and the time period afterwards. Hopefully they can connect to the characters in these stories and relate to these events spurring more hunger to learn.
