My goal is to create a distance learning environment that allows my students to connect with the language through authentic learning experiences. This setting will allow my non-native speakers or heritage learners to prepare for real-world experiences using the target language. One of the teaching strategies that I will be using during our distance learning is reading texts aloud, which will help all of my students access the material and develop their skills as active listeners. Reading is an essential element in my foreign language classroom.
Having authentic Spanish literature as a part of my teaching toolbox can be extremely helpful to my students’ language acquisition experience. For that reason, I wish to have an authentic library, which is nothing but texts that are written in the original, natural language of the authors. These authentic Spanish books will allow my language learners to see a variety of examples of how an entire population of our world uses Spanish in their everyday life situations. The rich language found in these books will captivate their interest in the Hispanic culture and consequently, enhance their desire to learn the language.
My students and I will look forward to having an authentic classroom library with a variety of genres, filled with colors and diversity that includes intriguing selections for them when schools re-open. They will aspire to manage the library themselves, self-select books, understand genres, conduct book talks with each other, make book recommendations and most significantly, spend time reading daily.
