My students are a spritely bunch full of enthusiasm for learning new knowledge. They are mostly all English Learners and as such I try to provide visuals and opportunities for them to access academic English. My students love dinosaurs, math games, writing books, and reading stories with ellipses. Their favorite books include any written by Ezra Jack Keats and Mo Willems. My school is committed to applying best practices and is transitioning into being a Readers and Writers Workshop school. Additionally we are using Singapore Math for the first time this year. Our school is located in a lower socio-economic neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of our students are native Spanish Speakers. Our hope is that in learning to read in their native language, are students will have a stronger literacy foundation in which to learn and access academic English.
