My first graders are in a Spanish dual-immersion program. 75% of our school's students are from low-income families. They are learning English at school and speak Spanish at home. Most students did not have the opportunity to attend preschool and so they start kindergarten without basic preschool skills and experiences. Many enter first grade still working to master the basic fine motor skills needed to write clearly.
