The students in my school district get the rare opportunity to have elementary music as a required subject matter. Although the recorder is a required performance instrument for upper grade students, some children become easily frustrated at how challenging it can be to produce a beautiful sound even after several tries.
Due to the simplicity of learning ukulele, students are able to find instant success and immediately feel like music-makers. Students even have the capabilities to sing and play at the same time (unlike the recorder), and they can easily transfer their learned knowledge of reading chords and rhythms to other instruments of interest, such as guitar or piano. While learning this instrument, students will learn to collaborate on learning songs in small groups, will accompany other singers, and will be given performance opportunities.
I believe that placing these instruments in my students' hands will unlock creativity, build mutual respect, refine hand-eye coordination, enhance student motivation, and build up self-confidence.
