These materials are so important to help develop and improve fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are those that involve a refined use of small muscles which control the hand, fingers, and thumb. With the development of these skills children can complete tasks such as writing, feedings themselves, buttoning, and zipping. Little hands need to develop dexterity and strength. These materials will encourage children to play and explore in a variety of ways by building and constructing different things. Children will enhance their fine motor skills by using tongs to sort the fruit by colors or the pretend knife to slice fruit on the cutting board. Having the fruit will be a great visual addition during our garden unit! Sometimes the boys are not as interested and would rather build or construct things so the drill will be a huge hit during our building unit. Participating in these age appropriate types of play will help prepare are children to hold a crayon. This is the first step in learning to color, draw, and write their name.
