My students come from a very hard socioeconomic area. A large number of my kids are on free and reduced lunch and they are not able to purchase what is necessary for school life. They are very talented, excited, and observant. They see that the world is hard, and they have grown up in a way that makes them look out for just themselves, and no one else.
