I teach General & Vocal Music to children from 1st through 5th grade at two schools. Each week, over 800 children get a 30-minute musical interlude with me. In the Music Classrooms, children rejoice in making music with their friends in a safe and special place where respect for diversity of all kinds serves as a foundation to everything we do. Beginning with mindful attention to our bodies and feelings, we explore rhythm, melody and harmony, ensemble singing, movement and dance, drama and storytelling, musical notation and basic music theory, as well as the history and appreciation of music worldwide. Students struggling to succeed in academic learning modalities often experience achievements in music that surprise them and their classroom teachers. Finally, our Music Classroom offers solace and encouragement for those struggling with emotional issues or difficult lives.
