Think about what's involved in learning print. You need attention, visual skills and memory, the finger strength needed in all those tiny muscles, all while maintaining efficient speed and avoiding fatigue...it's a lot! Learning handwriting through a structured manner has multiple benefits; research indicates that handwriting supports academic performance in reading and math, and handwritten note-taking supports retaining knowledge better than typed notes. The Size Matters Handwriting Program is an evidence-based handwriting program that teaches concepts, such as the importance of sizing, spacing, and line adherence and how to support these skills, that can be used with different handwriting curriculum. In addition to use by occupational therapists, the concepts can be introduced to teachers and aides using a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach. Through this 2-day workshop and certification course, I will learn the tools needed to implement the program, like learning the key concepts, providing appropriate writing accommodations, progress monitoring and assessing, and providing strategies to teachers at my school. It also provides many of the materials needed to start the program. Ultimately, I will be able to support not only my students, but our school's teachers, impacting other students in the school as well. Please help me with this opportunity!
