So why request a Skoog for my young learners? Preschool is a time that students are able to develop a relationship with learning as they experience the world through play. Play helps develop skills they will use to build a foundation for problem solving and working with others. The Skoog is a fun way for students to explore music through technology in a fun, and expressive ways. A Skoog will not only provide my class with opportunities to experiment and create in my classroom, but also the chance to collaborate with our computer technology and music teachers. Our computer technology teacher is passionate about exposing our students to the world of coding. He is purposefully showing students how to interact with technology in meaningful ways. His knowledge of apps and willingness to explore will help our students, music teacher, and me as we explore the Skoog app and learn how to use it to manipulate the device. In music, students will help our music teacher use the Skoog as an instrument to accompany songs and stories and to experience variety of sounds. Many traditional instruments require greater dexterity to play, but the Skoog’s easy to manipulate qualities make it a perfect instrument for my young friends who are practicing their fine motor skills. For me, the idea of using a Skoog is thinking outside of the box in regards to my students’ learning. This seems ironic when you take in to account that the Skoog is a boxed shaped instrument. Hopefully, this instrument will become an innovative building block in my students’ learning.
