Daily 5 in Literacy (Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Someone, and Listen to Reading) is an essential strategy I use in my classroom to develop independence, stamina, and accountability. My students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, meanwhile, allowing me time to meet in small-groups to enhance their learning goals. I have all the components for my Daily 5, except for "Listen to Reading". I do not have a listening center; which is essential for the growth of my first graders. It is important to provide an environment that remind students that reading is fun!
