Read All About it! The purpose of this project is to build and better our classroom library. Our classroom library will serve to inform, entertain, engage, and ultimately help my students develop self-efficacy in reading. I hope to include books on subjects across the curriculum (more specifically, math), as well as books on differing reading levels. "Eggs and Legs: Counting by Twos (Know Your Numbers)," and "If You Were a Minus Sign (Math Fun)," are two of the books requested that could potentially serve to further develop both, reading and math skills for my students. I also feel it is important to mention the "Read to Self whisper phones." These tools would be a valuable resource as my students begin to read independently and may not quite have the confidence to read out loud...yet! This personal, immediate, auditory feedback allows the student to self-correct as a means of building and improving fluency while reading. There are consistent associations between reading achievement and the availability of books in the child's environment (Chambliss & McKillop, 2000). Many of these students come from wonderful families who struggle to make ends meet and too often there is little left to invest in extra books and supplies that help foster a love of learning. My hope is that all of my students are able to learn through reading regardless of income or resources at home. Success is not something that can simply be measured by an individual’s possessions. Success is about enjoying the simple things in life. I want to create a culture in my classroom that encourages a love of reading and produces lifelong learners. This passion for knowledge will give my students an advantage that will make them successful by any measure.
