Students learn best when they are completing hands-on activities and collaborating with their peers. I am requesting toolboxs with locks to create breakout kits for our classroom. Students will be given clues related to their science & literacy curriculum. They will use these clues to solve a problem to unlock the various types of locks (four digit lock, three digit lock, hasp, key lock, alphabet lock, & directional lock) which will open the locked toolbox. The clues are written in invisible ink so that they can only be read with a blacklight. The breakout kit is similar to a modern day escape room; these rooms promote critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. With breakout kits students work as a team to figure out clues to solve a specific problem. Breakout kits allow students to use and expand on their critical thinking skills which are important to learn at the middle school level. They are versatile enough to be used in both my literacy and science classes to enhance learning.
