A sketchbook offers endless possibilities for exploration, imagination and creation in the art room. In my classroom, each project begins with a brainstorm sketch followed by trying out new materials and techniques. When students are given the opportunity to organize their work in the form of a sketchbook they can look back over a year of hard work and visually see their growth as an artist. Witnessing students so proud of all they have accomplished in a year is one of the most incredible things to experience as a teacher. The unfortunate reality is that art supplies are expensive and a single bound sketchbook can cost anywhere upwards of five dollars for a small sized book. These sketchbooks give students a sense of ownership over their work, however can only be used for one student until it is filled up, usually by the end of one year. At this point, another sketchbook must be bought for the student. I teach over 300 students meaning 300 sketchbooks are needed each year. As a right-brained, problem-solving art teacher I believe I have found a way to give my students the experience of having a sketchbook for all three years of their time at Laurelton-Pardee Intermediate School, while only purchasing them one time. By using 3 ring binders, students are able to keep their sketchbook from 3rd through 5th grade, adding papers along the way. At the end of 5th grade, students will take the papers out of the binder and create a hand-bound book. Afterwards, those sketchbooks will be given to the incoming 3rd graders the next year. By helping me build a collection of sketchbooks for my entire school, students now and in the far future will be able to have a place to collect their ideas.
