I am a third grade ESL teacher at a Title I school in Providence, Rhode Island where 89% of students come from low-income households and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My classroom is an integrated ESL class, which means that about half of the students are native English speakers and the other half are emergent bilinguals. This mixture of talents and abilities allows for all students to learn and grow by building off each other's strengths and collaborating to work to their full potential. We work together to co-create a classroom that mirrors what we would like to see in the world: a multilingual community of learners who are connected and supportive of one another, working together to design creative solutions to difficult problems toward a vision of equity and justice.
