Over 92% of the students in my students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. The 600+ students in our K-5 public school score in the mid-range in terms of test scores, yet with our school focusing academic attention to English Language Development, and basic skills, primary reading, writing and math, science has not been a primary focus. The new Common Core Standards are emphasizing both literature and informative texts, and I want to provide a print rich classroom with a wide variety of student friendly science books. My 3rd graders are extremely curious about the world around them and are eager to learn how and why things work and to learn more about the natural world. Most of my students do not have any books in their homes. I lend my students books on an honor system so that they can read every night, which is another reason why I feel it is so important to have a large and accessible classroom library.
