Quest for Success is a project based course created by educators, in conjunction with industry partners, to meet the needs of the 21st century workforce. Industry partners, concerned with the growing number of employees with a wealth of academic knowledge but no soft skills, assisted educators in developing this course to teach students the ability to communicate, collaborate, and lead. The project based nature of this course allows students to take the first step in discovering their own interests, exploring career paths, and gaining the essential soft skills needed to thrive as the future of our community. Students will gain insight into career and educational pathways, money management, community involvement, and digital citizenship. Because projects in this course require students to develop digital presentations, we need a large television and stand to attach to our laptop so the presentations can be viewed by our class and industry professionals invited as special guests. Initial projects involve students working to develop and create a visual representation of their personal brand using markers, colored pencils, paper, and sticky notes in a goal setting activity culminating in the creation of vision boards. Additionally, students will use cups, balloons, and tape in team building exercises that develop leadership and communication skills. Students will use the other requested supplies to learn entrepreneurial skills by building a food truck model and developing a business plan. The learning experiences in this course will culminate in students choosing a project to better the community and working in teams to make it happen. I am confident that the steps that my students take this year will truly put them on the pathway to future success.
