We are living in a world where students have easier access to iPhones than scissors. As a first year teacher in kindergarten, I have to introduce fine motor manipulatives and tools for students to refine emergent literacy skills such as writing. Offering a variety of manipulatives in my classroom will encourage my students to practice using their hand and finger muscles to eventually use writing utensils with precision. While manipulatives help with fine motor skills, they also allow students opportunities to engage in math comprehension. They can count beads, subitize quantities and use a 10 frame.
