My mom's theme these year is... dogs! She is going to fill the room with doggy themed FLEXIBLE SEATING and SENSORY ITEMS. It is going to be a great place to come and learn. Sometimes being able to move helps students focus. Wobble stools and cushions will be a great addition to our room. Students are going to be ecstatic to find doggy beds as one of the seating options on the floor! My mom wants to have headphones and earplugs (she is going to put dog ears on them!), so that students can filter out sounds that hurt their ears. I am excited to meet the weighted sensory lap dogs, but I might get a little jealous. Literacy-based language intervention is so much fun! Using storybooks and themed lessons to learn new vocabulary, and improve grammar and syntax is the best. My mom loves teaching students how to tell stories and use new words. Being able to understand what you read can be difficult. My mom is teaching students how to use their detective skills to define words they do not know. A VOCABULARY LISTENING CENTER and READING COMPREHENSION activities will help students continue to practice language comprehension strategies. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY here we come! Students need headphones with microphones so we can use speech to text and listen to our ideas using text to speech. My mom believes in the power of YET. Older students who are struggling to read and write are not able to complete work independently...yet. That is why she really wants students to be able to use technology in order to continue to be exposed to academic vocabulary and complex syntax! C-pens read to the students and even provide a definition for words! TECHNOLOGY MAKES EVERYTHING POSSIBLE.
