The students at my school are brilliant, but a bit sheltered. Art is not at all considered a "subject", but a time to "be creative". Yes, creativity is important, but it is also important to understand why art is so important, how art originated, and where art can be found. By supporting this idea, art can be seen as a "subject" that has history , and can foster learning by showing that art can be used in conjunction to what is being learned in the core classroom. The school takes a family approach to know every student by name & need. I as an art teacher know that students NEED Art. We strive at supporting our students through more than just academics. Social experiences are an important part of learning, and growing up. Social experiences teach students to express themselves, and learn about the world around them , which is a huge part of my art classroom.
