My students are amazing young people. They think differently, behave differently, and learn differently. But, they live in the same world as their typically developing peers. They have daily challenges with communication, behavior, and social skills. Specialized instruction, intensive interventions, and real-life learning are the key to these students' success and independence. Some of my students are unable to communicate their wants and needs and their sensory systems become overwhelmed with too much noise or activity around them, often making it very difficult to function in public places. Most of my students are also from economically disadvantaged homes and are often not exposed to the typical experiences of children of middle class families, such as going to the zoo, seeing snow or the ocean, or even leaving their immediate neighborhood. With a camera and Chromebook they will be able to that and much more.
