Think about it this way. When you are at home, do you feel comfortable sitting in the same spot one hundred percent of the time? No! You like choices. Those choices help you complete your tasks and feel energized and comfortable in your work space. Our community worked hard to redesign our classroom. Each student had a part in making supply lists, designing the space and even talking to me about what they want to see in the perfect classroom.
Creating an energizing and independent learning space can help create life long learners! These chairs, stools, wobble chairs and sensory carpets will provide students with choices and allow them to pick where they want to sit and create their own space to work in. It will allow students who struggle to stay still, the option to move around, but stay focused on their work. Students who feel nervous or uncomfortable in school will be able to pick a more comfortable learning spot and can better focus when their nerves are settled.
The sensory mats, rocker chairs and bean bags will create a more safe and welcoming community. The school where I work has many students who encounter traumatic experiences and rarely feel safe. Creating an environment they can feel safe and happy in, will help them excel and learn how to create a safe learning space independently, so they can become life long learners by always creating their own learning space.
