My students come from primarily free/reduced lunch households. I have taught several ELD (English Language Development) sections for students who are not yet fully English proficient along with mainstream 11th grade Literacy. I also created the country's first high school level Gender Studies class to promote equity on behalf of our female and LGBTQIA students. My kids struggle to see themselves represented or as "academic" learners. My students consistently exercise compassion, understanding and respect for their peers and myself, but are told by their environment that these do not count as "skills". I try to maintain an academically rigorous classroom while also promoting the idea of the full person. I want my students to find ways to make the world a better place and I push them to expand their definition of success and the ways in which they can accomplish this.
