A student should be able to look within a classroom library and find books that reflect who they are. The titles chosen to add to our classroom library are to promote diversity and the various backgrounds and cultures my students represent. “Books are windows, but also mirrors. We often can relate to most any story in some way, however, if we cannot connect to the illustrations that do not mirror us, we will become apathetic to stories.” We will use these materials as mentor texts as we develop as readers and writers. By having various authors and mentor texts to utilize, we will be able to develop the craft of writing, as well as hold discussions related to character development and understanding the world around us. These materials will increase my students' confidence in the classroom, which will lead to improved academic achievement and social-emotional abilities.
