Books are essential to any Language Arts classroom, but as a teacher tasked with leading a group of avid readers, I often find myself struggling to come up with a class novel that appeals to my diverse group of students. That is why, this year, I have decided to incorporate book clubs in my 7th grade Advanced ELA curriculum. Students will be given the opportunity to choose the novel they read during the second nine weeks of school; they will spend the majority of their class time discussing that novel with a small group of peers. Students' objective will be to track the "hero's journey" (a la Joseph Campbell) that takes place within their novel and discuss what it means to be a hero or heroine. Before undertaking that task in small groups, I would first like to read Coraline as a whole class so that students can practice identifying the different stages of the hero's journey. Not only will students benefit from studying the nuances of Neil Gaiman's quirky writing style, but I believe they will really enjoy the book's overall creativity and cleverness. This project will allow each student to have access to his or her own copy of the novel as we study it together!
