My students are readers who are significantly below grade level in reading and there are many who do not currently see reading as an easy or fun task. They want to succeed, but feel a road block in the way of improving. It is my job to change their perceptions of reading through remediation and igniting a love of reading. Many of them struggle with behaviors because traditional reading curriculum has not celebrated all cultures and backgrounds and therefore reading has been boring. Recently published high-interest, low-readability texts allow these students to feel successful in reading a book at their level about something they want to learn or celebrate. Our school has high expectations of the students and celebrates its diversity. Our district has met the students at their level by making reading a priority this year and therefore we could use all of the help we can get with this brand-new, student-centered program!
