My classroom is made up of 100% students of color who come from low income communities. All my students have special needs so reading has been a difficult journey for most of them. One of the best ways to increase student reading levels is to practice reading as much as possible. Unfortunately, most of my books have been donated by previous teachers so they are outdated, irrelevant, and tattered. My students deserve quality books with characters that represent them. With these new titles, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. It is important that I give my students access to new and engaging books to increase excitement for reading and decrease frustration.
