Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, about 90% economically disadvantaged (Title 1 School). Even though each student comes to us with home struggles, they know they can step onto school grounds and not only feel safe, but loved. We are what we call a Capturing Kids Hearts campus. We believe that "if you have a child's heart, you have his head". To do this, we have been working on building trust, student motivation, and self-managing classrooms, all while teaching students to take ownership of their actions. It has been a challenge developing this type of classroom, but I can confidently say that our students have become more self-sufficient and more confident in their abilities. First grade is typically a big transition for students because so much is expected, but my students will tell you right away that they will leave the first grade prepared for second! My students love to come to school and I would not have it any other way!
