This class of first graders has never had a school year that wasn’t affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. They were in pre-K when the pandemic hit, and their kindergarten and first grade years have been continually impacted by illness, school closures, staffing shortages, and extended protective measures which have changed much of the school environment. Students do not have as much freedom to move as before, such as being limited to a particular section of the playground at a time. Though these measures help to control the spread of illness, they also prevent children from playing freely and moving their bodies in ways that are necessary for proper development.
These wobble stools will allow my students to move while staying focused on their work. They will be able to wiggle without the risk of falling out of their chairs or causing other distractions. By being permitted to move without distracting others, students are not only helping themselves stay focused, they are helping their classmates stay focused as well. This means that even children who are not using a wobble stool on a particular day will still benefit from their presence in the classroom.
