The key to learning is engaging students, and the best way to engage students is to allow them to read about the topics they find interesting and about which they have a natural curiosity. These texts sets include topics such as Pompeii, volcanoes, and archaeologists; Ancient Egypt, mummies, King Tut, and pyramids; Gorillas, Chimpanzees, primatologists, and Jane Goodall; The Titanic and The Hindenburg disasters. These text sets will be used both in the classroom and at home, especially for those students who generally tend to find it difficult to engage with text because they rarely find texts that hold their interest. In these sets, one text builds off the interest that other texts create, giving students a solid background on a topic and allowing for both questioning and discovery. The best way to become a strong reader is to read voluminously, so by offering students text sets that include both high interest fictional stories and related non-fiction informational texts on the most engaging topics, students will want to read more, thereby becoming better readers because they are naturally motivated to read. After being a Literacy Coach for the last six years, I am returning to the classroom to do my part in making sure all students get the education they need right now, despite the disruption from Covid and distance learning. In the process, I decimated my own library by sharing the books I spent years accumulating to get them into the hands of students that needed them. Now I am faced with the return to teaching minus the tool I most depend on, while school funding is absent, as are all the used book sales that typically take place each summer. Any help to replenish my library and get texts into my students hands will be fantastic!
