We all work our best and can focus better when we are comfortable, right? I know I don't work my best when I don't feel safe or focused in my own environment, so then why do we expect our little learners to thrive without giving them that very same option? I have always believed that my kiddos should get to "work around the room". I now want to give them even more choices for seating during their individual work time!
I believe in a classroom that there should be an equal balance of work and fun!
I always encourage my kids to do their best work, but we must first get a handle on their extra wiggles. A 2012 study done by the University of Minnesota showed that flexible seating encouraged more collaboration and discussion in the classroom. I would like for the students to get to use the wobble stool, inflatable, and bouncy bands in my classroom during instruction and small groups. I also plan to create 5 more stand up desks in my classroom by adding height to the existing desks. I plan to attach the bands to these stand up desks. Students can move around the room to use the wobble chair and ball in our library area as well. Flexible seating will help my students to be more engaged and it will help to support a community of learners.
