My school is located in a rural area of Washington state. There are approximately 630 students attending our primary school. We service kindergarten through third grade. Many students come from low socio-economic homes. We have a large population of English language learning students as well. Our staff is very supportive to each individual student as well as to one another. Due to limited funds our music program has been stifled due to lack of funding. Our instruments are in short supply and in need of repair. Many of these students will only have the opportunity to interact with instruments in the primary school setting. Music supports learning, and within this population of students music will support students music knowledge but will also support early literacy. Often low socio-economic areas have low scores in early literacy. Our school fits right into that scenario.
