It is crucial for children to see themselves in the books they read. Books can act as mirrors for children to see their cultures, experiences, and traditions reflected in literature. Books can also be windows; allowing children to look into new cultures and learn about the world around them. Finally, books can be sliding glass doors; allowing students to step into and experience the world around them (Bishop, 2009). 'Same, Same, but Different' by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw discusses the similarities and differences between American and Indian cultures. 'Lailah's Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story' by Reem Faruqi is the story that teaches about the tradition of Ramadan. Seeing their own traditions and culture represented in a book, and learning about the culture of their classmates is extremely important in order for students to develop empathy and compassion towards others. Books are the gateway to the world. They help children manage their feelings and emotions. They can teach and support academic growth as well as social and emotional development. Putting quality books into the hands of children will not only prepare them in their educational career, but also as citizens of their community and the world. 'I Walk with Vanessa' by Kerascoët is a beautiful story about being a good friend and a supportive member of your community. 'Forever or a Day' by Sarah Jacoby discusses the cherished moments with loved ones and teaches children about the importance in recognizing and appreciating the beauty of life. These books will help my students become well-rounded and reflective individuals.
