I have a class of reluctant 8th grade readers. They are terrific students that have not had the experience with books that encouraged them to read. My goal is to provide them with valuable, engaging experiences with books that will last them for a lifetime. We meet daily for 1 hour and I connect literacy skills they need to know with engaging novels such as "House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros, Edgar Allan Poe's poetry--teachers do not commonly expose students to his poetry--, and "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Parks. I try to use novels that not only teach the literacy skills but also teach human experiences through history.
