My love for reading started with Dick and Jane as I looked JUST like Sally. I related immediately to the stories---after all, there I was on the pages. In receiving a recent Master's in Literacy my research revealed that children must relate to the stories they see and hear. A connection to what is familiar must occur for real learning to take place. This information prompted me to look at my classroom library through the eyes of my very diverse students. Were the many colors and cultures of my curious kindergartners reflected in the books they saw in my classroom library? The answer was an astounding "no".
